MILESTONES, Page 61
DIED. Robert Penn Warren, 84, the only American writer to win
Pulitzer Prizes for both fiction and poetry and the first U.S. poet
laureate; in Stratton, Vt. Warren's writings were deeply rooted in
his native South. His 1946 novel All the King's Men, based on
Louisiana's legendary populist Governor Huey Long, became an
Academy Award-winning film. Warren was one of the first to win a
MacArthur Foundation "genius grant." In 1980 he was given the Medal
of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award.
